What is LiDAR?

LiDAR is a technology that senses precise distances using invisible laser beams. By measuring thousands of distances in a defined field of view a 3D point cloud can be generated.

This data can be processed and used in autonomous driving and driver assistance systems, like highway pilot or active cruise control to detect, classify and track the objects in the environment of the vehicle. By fusing data or the objects detected with the data from other sensors, such as camera vision or mmWave radar, a highly precise digital twin of the vehicle environment can be generated.

LiDAR sensors have been used for years in automotive application, but never reached high volumes. The solid state PERCEPT LiDAR platform now reduces complexity, allowing OEMs to bring LiDAR in mass production of private cars. Besides of that PERCEPT is still keeping the flexibility for different applications and driving situations using a novel beam steering approach. Together with OSRAM‘s strengths in industrialization and in scaling automotive production we will be offering PERCEPT at a highly competitive price point.​

LiDAR Time of Flight Method

Time-of-flight LiDAR

Time-of-Flight (ToF) is the method for measuring the distance between a sensor and an object, based on the time difference between the emission of a signal and its return to the sensor, after being reflected by an object. The ToF distance measurement approach is the main stream for LiDAR applications with the highest technological maturity. There are three main principles of modulating. OSRAM PERCEPT is based on the pulsed emission approach where a laser pulse is emitted, and a part of it is reflected back from an object. A detector close to the emitter collects the received light signal and the time it took to come back. The distance can be calculated based on this information. The main advantages are the simplicity of the setup, stability, robustness, and the availability of components.
